Develop Skills for Life
The skills taught in the Yoga Ed program are skills that children, as well as teachers, can use in their daily lives to adjust themselves so that they are able to deal with stress, peer pressure, etc. When children learn to regulate their emotional/mental state they are able to be successful in life. Just knowing that they "can" adjust their state of being is incredibly empowering for a child and a skill that they are able to learn quite easily when shown how.
If children are exposed to yoga by an experienced teacher a dramatic decrease in violence and aggression occurs. Only a 4 ½ hour exposure to yoga over a period of two weeks has been shown to result in up to a 93% decrease in aggressive behavior in 4thand 5th grade (T. R., Overpeck, M., Pilla, R. S., Ruan, W. J., Simons-Morton, B., & Scheidt, P. (2001). Bullying behaviors among U..). The results obtained in this study confirm that classical yoga which addresses the body, mind and spirit is an elegant tool for implementing behavioral changes when administered correctly to upper elementary age children.
When you teach a child how to self-regulate it empowers them and gives them tools that they will be able to use throughout their lives to create a harmonious inner and outer environment. Children are very open to the concepts of yoga and when they learn these skills, just as learning how to ride a bicycle, it stays with them throughout their lives. It is the best form of preventative medicine out in the world today, as it addresses not only an individuals physical body but their emotional and physiological state as well.
